Instrumental Music Calendar, Syllabus and More...

September 6, 2017

"I've always loved the first day of school better than the last day of school.  Firsts are best because they are beginnings."

Jenny Han

The first day of school is like New Years Day.  It's a great time to renew the habits that have been working well and create new habits to replace those that haven't been working so well.  If you haven't had a conversation with your child (children) about this, I encourage you to do so.  This is the perfect time to chart the course for success for the new school year.

I hope that you've had the time to look at the information on www.cavmusic.com since my last email.  It contains all of the information that your child (children) will need to be successful in the South Carroll HS Instrumental music program.

Additionally, I've attached the 2017-2018 SCH Fine Arts calendar to this email.  Please note that not all events on the calendar apply to all students.  The first concert for band and orchestra students is on October 24, 2017.

Updates and reminders will be sent via the SCH morning announcements,  periodic emails, and posted in the South Carroll High School Band and Orchestra Facebook group.

If you're not sure about something, please don't hesitate to email me at jrsteve@carrollk12.org or text me at 443-803-7482.  If you text me, please include your name so I know who I'm corresponding with.

Finally, I'd like to answer a few questions that arose at back-to-school night.

Q: Does my child need to participate in marching band in order to be in Band I/Honors Wind Ensemble?

A: No.  Band I/Honors Wind Ensemble are curricular classes that meet during the school day and present periodic public performances in the evening.  Marching Band is a voluntary, extracurricular activity.

Q:  Are concerts graded?

A:  Yes.  Per the CCPS instrumental music course descriptions, evening concerts are a required part of the course and will be graded.  If attendance at evening concerts is a concern, please contact me.

Q:  I heard that students need to purchase concert attire.  What's up with that?

A:  Yes, students need to purchase uniform concert attire.  Performances are formal occasions.  In order to eliminate the focus on individual student fashion and shift the focus to the music being presented by the students all instrumental music students must purchase and wear uniform concert attire.

Concert attire for students who receive free meals will be free.  Concert attire for students who receive reduced-price meals will be reduced by 25%.  If this dress code presents a hardship, please contact me at your earliest convenience.  We gladly accept donations of outgrown or no-longer-needed items from the above list.

You can read more about concert attire at www.cavmusic.com.  Additional information will be sent home in the next few days.

Upward and onward!
- Mr. Steve
