Introduction

​

Help us Bring Back the Band by performing in the South Carroll High School Cavalier Pep Band at home varsity football games.  We’ll perform in the stands and on the field during halftime this year to lay the groundwork for a full-fledged marching band next year.  Additionally, we’ll participate in pep rallies and other school spirit events throughout the year.

 

The commitment is minimal, the music is easy, and it’s a great chance to make friends with folks who share a common interest – all while having lots of fun supporting school spirit!

 

This opportunity is open to ALL Cavalier musicians, including string players interested in playing percussion.  If you can read music including sixteenth-note patterns or have finished book 2 of any popular method book, you should be able to learn the music.

 

If you’re interested, please complete this form ASAP: https://forms.gle/d8UhCjtGRJnePSae8.  Responding by August 21 will help me get music and equipment ready for the first few rehearsals.  If you’re not sure if you’re ready to make a commitment, please complete the form anyway – you’re welcome to come to the first few rehearsals before you make a final decision.  Students do need to make a firm commitment by Friday, September 1st.  If you do commit, I expect you to perform at all four home varsity football games.

Pep Band Rehearsals:

• Rehearsals during the fall varsity football season will generally take place on Thursdays between 6 and 8 PM.  Percussionists may also be asked to rehearse on Tuesdays if necessary.  You can find the complete schedule at https://www.cavmusic.com/calendar.

• Students should enter via the auditorium doors closest to the funeral home.  If nobody is there to let you in, please text me at 443-803-7482 and either a student or I will let you in.

Typical Varsity Football Day Pep Band Schedule:

• Students welcome to stay after school to do homework, talk, or watch a movie in SCH Bandroom

• 4:45 PM            Warm-up and rehearse in SCH Bandroom

• 5:15 PM             Dinner (Bring your own, or purchase – more information below)

• 5:55 PM            Outside, ready to march to field

• 6 PM                   March to field

• 9 PM                   Game over (Approximate time)

I’ll print parts and have them ready at the first rehearsal for folks who sign-up.  I’m also continuing to write new music and will provide parts to you as they are ready. I especially want new music to challenge folks who played in Pep Band last year.  I’m also open to adding or deleting tunes based on student input – just let me know by sending me an email.  If you would like to participate in Pep Band but feel that any of the music is too difficult, please send me a private email and I’ll work with you to modify it to suit your abilities.  I want YOU to be successful!!

 

 

Expenses

 

I’m trying to keep Pep Band as low cost and high impact as possible, however there a few items that you will need to purchase:

 

• Lyre – You will need a lyre (pronounced ‘liar’) to attach the music to you instrument.  (Lyres cost about $15 and can be purchased at any local music store – just take your instrument with you to make sure you purchase the correct one). I will provide specialized lyres for percussionists at no cost.

• Dinner – You will have the option to purchase a dinner prior to each game.  The dinner will consist of two slices of pizza, water, fresh fruit and a cookie for roughly $7.00. More information about this will be sent home later.

• Uniform – You’ll be given with a free t-shirt for games.  The t-shirts are new and you will keep them.  You’ll also have the option to purchase a pep band sweatshirt for colder games.  I’ll send order information soon.  You’ll need to wear dark pants (jeans), socks and shoes for all performances.

 

 

Eligibility

Students in the Cavalier Pep Band are required to comply with all CCPS eligibility requirements.  I will distribute hard copies of the required CCPS forms at the first few rehearsals.  They should be returned no later than September 8th, 2024.
