We had a great initial meeting and CavMusic Pep Band rehearsal on Tuesday, August 20. The Pep Band has doubled in size from last year and everyone made great progress in a very short amount of time. I'm hoping that we can perform a short halftime show this year in addition to supporting the varsity football team in the stands. We have super student leaders who have great ideas for activities outside of rehearsals and performances too! There is still time to join us - if you think you or a South Carroll student you know might be interested in joining us, please read the information below and give us a try. All we ask is that students make a final commitment by August 29 so we can order performance attire in time for the first home varsity football game. In 2019 - before the Pandemic - the South Carroll HS Marching Band earned second place in our division at the State marching band competition at Towson University. We also earned the Philip Glass Creativity Award for our show design and presentation. We did this with roughly half the rehearsal time of our other competitors. After tonight's rehearsal, I'm confident that we're moving in the right direction to field a championship marching band in the next year or two. The information below has been previously shared. I'm sharing it again for anyone who might want to review it again and maybe join us!

Introduction
Help us Bring Back the Band by performing in the South Carroll High School Cavalier Pep Band at home varsity football games. We’ll perform in the stands and on the field during halftime this year. Additionally, we’ll participate in in-school pep rallies throughout the year. The commitment is minimal, the music is easy, and it’s a great chance to make friends with folks who share a common interest – all while having lots of fun supporting school spirit! This opportunity is open to ALL Cavalier musicians, including string players interested in playing percussion. If you can read music that includes sixteenth notes or have finished book 2 of any popular method book, you should be able to learn the music with a little practice.
Registration
If you’re interested, please come to the first rehearsal on August 20 at 6PM in the SCH Bandroom. Caregivers are also welcome to attend. Even if you’re not sure if Pep Band is for you, please come to the first rehearsal or two before you make a final commitment.
I do ask that students make a firm commitment by midnight on Thursday, August 29 by completing the following form https://www.cavmusic.com//_paylink/AZFY0UDD. Students who commit are expected to perform at all five home varsity football games and in-school pep rallies throughout the year and will receive a CavMusic branded t-shirt for warmer games and full-zip microfleece jacket for colder games from a local vendor. After you complete the registration form, PLEASE send me a brief email at JRSteve@carrollk12.org with student name, adult t-shirt size, and the instrument they'll play in Pep Band. (After several hours of frustration, I gave up on trying to figure out how to add it to the form).

Music
You can preview the music via this link: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1VH4Lf0hTmhEgdWvl3f8Rt-dD8S-tv9m8?usp=drive_link. Please don’t overlook “This is My Country” at the bottom of the list. I will provide hardcopies of the music for students.I’m open to adding or deleting tunes based on student input – please don’t hesitate to send your thoughts to me at JRSteve@carrollk12.org.If you would like to participate in Pep Band but feel that any of the music is too difficult, please send me an email and I’ll work with you to modify the music to suit your abilities. I want you to be successful!
Expenses
I’m trying to keep Pep Band as low cost and high impact as possible, however there a few items that you will need to purchase:
Uniform – You’ll need to purchase a branded t-shirt for warmer games and full-zip microfleece jacket for colder games for a total cost of $50.00 (included in registration the information above). Additionally, students are expected to wear black pants (jeans are fine), black socks, and black shoes/sneakers for all performances. No exceptions.
Lyre – You will need a lyre (pronounced ‘liar’) to attach the music to your instrument. (Lyres cost about $15 and can be purchased at any local music store – just take your instrument with you to make sure you purchase the correct one). I will provide specialized lyres for percussionists at no cost.
Dinner (Optional) – You will have the option to purchase a light dinner prior to each home varsity football game. More information about this will be sent home before the first game.
Eligibility
Returning members MUST have a 2.0 GPA and no "F’s" in the 4th quarter of the last semester. It is the 4th quarter grade that determines your eligibility, not the final grade! Please check the bottom right-hand corner of the last report card received to confirm eligibility. If you are not eligible and would like to apply for restricted eligibility (may be used one time in high school career), please call the main office at 410-751-3575 ASAP to make an appointment. All incoming 9th graders are automatically eligible to participate.
Questions? Please don’t hesitate to send me an email at JRSteve@carrollk12.org and I’ll get back to you ASAP.
