Maryland Winds, a professional concert band, will present a concert in the South Carroll HS Auditorium on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 7:30 pm. The concert will showcase guest musicians from Carroll County High Schools, including four student musicians from South Carroll High School.
The heart of this concert borrows both its theme and title from Percy Grainger's four-movement suite, In a Nutshell, which reflects the abundance of music and imagery that fills the program. Woven into this theme is the delightful interplay of featured clarinetists, Tom Puwalski and Donna Noyes, whose duet in Concertino for Jazz and Legit Clarinets highlights their individual and unique stylings. In contrast, Swearingen's The Light Eternal, honors the courage and sacrifice of four Army chaplains, who, as their ship sank off Greenland on February 3, 1943, gave away their lifejackets to save others.
From Trittico, written for William Revelli and his legendary University of Michigan Symphony Band, to the timeless sounds of Ralph Vaughan Williams, Dana Wilson, and Hoagy Carmichael, In a Nutshell promises a riveting journey through music, memory, and meaning.
The Maryland Winds is an ensemble of professional musicians in the greater Baltimore-Washington, DC, area. Most members are current or past performers with the premier military bands, major symphony orchestras, or are freelancers. Many members are also active music educators.
The ensemble’s three-fold focus is to bring world-class wind band repertoire to Marylanders, to help instrumental music teachers and their students on their respective musical journeys, and to facilitate the opportunity for like-minded instrumental musicians to come together to present public performances on par with the world’s finest performing ensembles.
