Returning for a third time to the South Carroll High School auditorium, Maryland Winds will present a concert in the style of America’s March King, John Philip Sousa, on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at 7:30 pm. Also featured are select students and band directors from across the Carroll County high schools, as they join with Maryland Winds musicians in performance.
The band will present music that the Sousa Band performed during the early 19 Century, to include plenty of Sousa’s marches interspersed throughout the program. There will be two featured soloists for the evening. Principal trombonist Scott Shelsta will present Thoughts of Love, by Arthur Pryor, who was the Sousa Band trombone soloist, and piccolo extraordinaire James Miller will play another Pryor favorite, The Whistler and His Dog.
Maryland Winds is a professional concert band based in Howard County, Maryland. The ensemble’s three-fold focus is to bring world-class wind band repertoire to Marylanders, to help instrumental music teachers and their students on their respective musical journeys, and to facilitate the opportunity for like-minded instrumental musicians to come together to present public performances on par with the world’s finest performing ensembles.
Come join the fun, support the Carroll County music community, and enjoy a night of something for everyone. Concert sponsors include the Carroll County Arts Council, Howard County Arts Council, Maryland State Arts Council, South Carroll High School, and Carroll County Public Schools.
